George Papadimitriou

Painter / Athens, Greece

About me

Ever since I was a child I have been expressing myself through painting and music. Trying to discover every day a new path in the wonderful labyrinth called Art, I paint with passion, externalizing my emotional anxieties, fears and obsessions, in the way that the great teachers of expressionism taught. My ultimate goal is to recognize myself through my work. Being true is my moto, so those who can ‘read’ my paintings can look inside my soul.

What was your artistic journey?

I was born in Athens, Greece, where I live and work. I studied (2012-2018) painting and history of art in ‘ARTe Workshop’ in Athens. I have carried out 9 personal exhibitions in Athens and the island of Syros and also participated in various group exhibitions. Many of my works belong to various private and public collections.

Which Region has impacted your artistic journey most and why?

The history of my land, Greek mythology, Byzantine art and the great Greek masters have a huge impact on my work. The inspiration for the paintings I create comes from everything that happens around me every day. My favorite movements are Expressionism and Post-impressionism.
Favorite worldwide masters: Balthus, Lautrec, Schiele, Munch, Van Gogh, Goya & Velazquez.
Favorite Greek masters: Moralis, Tsarouchis, Parthenis, Bouzianis & Gyzis.

About my specific techniques

Having experimented for years with different materials (coals, acrylics, oils, powders, etc.) and observing the interactions between them and the literally unpredictable result, it is rare that I will use only one material. Warmly defending Francis Bacon’s view of the importance of ‘random’ in painting, I too often let the materials lead me on their own. I observe with admiration and anticipation, the texture that is slowly formed by the chemical reactions between ‘mismatched’ materials or the drips from the turpentine on the previous layers of the project. As a fan of expressionism, I mainly use bright colors with the help of brushes and spatulas, but quite often I work with my hands to better experience the work. For some projects, I have previously worked on drafts, while in others I experiment directly on the canvas.

The region of Attika, Greece

Every educated person who reads about Athens, the capital of Greece, immediately thinks about ancient glories: the place where Socrates and Plato developed their philosophical and political theories. Majestic temples and ancient marble statues appear in front of the imaginary view. Many stories from the world of gods and legends are woven around t…
