The incarnation of figurative creation

At a certain point in history, it was not enough anymore to depict feelings and expressions only in paintings. Other materials and art forms were necessary to send artistic messages. One of these art forms manifests in sculptures providing a more holistic presentation of an artwork. A sculpture represents our known 3D world in its entire shapes, allowing the viewer to admire it from all angles. Sculptures came into the world at an early stage of humanity and we can find and admire ancient artefacts in many museums around the world.

When it comes to materials, the very first sculptures were made of Clay, Bronze were then later cut from wood. One of these much-known artefacts is the “Venus of Willendorf” which is dated back to 25.000 B.C. On the other hand, think for example of the “Terracotta Army” in China dated back to 200 B.C. During the Hellenic and Roman period, the art of creating sculptures reached its peak and manifested in marble sculptures representing the classical ideal of human beings and animals. One of these famous sculptures is without doubt “Hermes” by Praxiteles. The famous sculpture of “Hermes” is exhibited in Olympia in Greece. This art form then was reused during Renaissance times leading to unforgotten marble statues such as Michelangelo’s “David”. As the events of history carved their traces, art changed accordingly.

The central matters of justice and freedom left their marks in the thoughts and expressions of mankind and incarnated in the sculptures that emerged. Auguste Rodin depicted sculptures on an equal level with the audience leading to sculptures like “The Burghers of Calais”.

It was considered to break with traditional sculptures that used to stand on columns for admiration and heroic purposes. However, not only political and societal circumstances formed the art of sculptures. The technological evolvement starting from industrialization up to the age of information and communication technologies brought new thoughts about the identification and value of work. Processes were automized, people found jobs in the industrial age. On the other hand, purpose was lost due to limited responsibilities of work share. The sculptures which were created during that time reflected this new stage of society and work. After industrialization and two World Wars the digital age slightly made its way to a more electronic and online consumption of art.
