Enlightment and philosophical evolution

Some tangible well-known paintings of the time were “The Ladies” by Leonardo da Vinci, “The Pallas” by Botticelli and “Galatia” by Raphael.

The use of Latin helped to spread Greek Mythology, influencing the poets of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. In Northern Europe the influence of mythology on art was certainly not of the same intensity, nevertheless it was evident in both literature and artworks.

The “philosophical revolution” of the Enlightenment of the 18th century spread rapidly throughout Europe, which at the same time reduced the interest in Greek mythology in art but continued the interest in the science and philosophy of the Greeks and Romans. Going through the era of Romanticism there was a strong interest and enthusiasm for everything Greek and consequently for Greek mythology.

Mythology over time has influenced and continues to influence people from different parts of the world in areas such as Literature, poetry, theater and of course painting. It remains remarkable, is that mythology remains a timeless theme for artists to create, either in its classic version or in its modernized form. The charming aspect of mythology is that lots of the ancient Greek gods and heroes were representing human aspects, whether good or bad. Therefore, people of all centuries could always identify with the gods due to the fact that they were not perfect.
